The word harbor means shelter, refuge, and protection. Long before it became a place for ships, it signified a safe resting place after a long journey, a welcoming pause amidst the trials from traveling. Duluth’s harbor isn’t just the finish line of Grandma’s marathon, it embodies a what the 30 for Freedom initiative is running towards every day. Each mile is a meaningful stride towards offering refuge for someone else. The harbor serves as a reminder that, like the ships docking in its embrace, we can help offer a place of safety and restoration for those navigating life’s turbulent waters. Offer a harbor, at the end of the road.

Around the world, tens of millions of people are trapped in situations of modern slavery including forced labor and sex trafficking.1 30 for Freedom focuses its efforts on three pillars: prevention (raising awareness and interrupting trafficking before it happens), rescue (funding operations that bring victims to safety), and restoration (helping survivors heal and rebuild their lives).

As I train for Grandma’s Marathon, I’m learning to move from comfort into discomfort, to run for those who can’t, and to remember that every mile, every step, is a small act of hope for the millions still are waiting for freedom.

Did You Know? The Real “Grandma” of Duluth’s Harbor

Long before Grandma’s Marathon or the restaurant that was the sole contributor to the original race and inspiration to the name, Duluth’s waterfront had its own legend, a woman everyone called “Grandma.”

Her real name was Rosa Brochi, and in the early 1900s she was known for caring for sailors and dock workers. Offering them food, warmth and sometimes medical help. She became an unofficial nurse to the men passing through the port and a comforting presence in a tough industrial city. She grew into Duluth Harbor folklore and the locals saw the marathon and restaurant name as a fitting tribute to a spirit of hospitality.
